Performance analysis of structured overlay networks

چکیده
Acknowledgements This monograph summarizes five years of research studies, an everlasting struggle for publications, numerous perceived nervous breakdowns, and above all a very pleasant time with my colleagues who by now have all become dear friends of mine. This work would not have been possible if it had not been for them and a number of other people who all helped and supported me in different ways. First of all I would like to thank my advisor Prof. Phuoc Tran-Gia who not only provided me with an excellent opportunity to work in a scientific environment but did so with great technical as well as interpersonal commitment. Due to his untiring efforts I was able to participate in both industrial as well as Eu-ropean research projects. Beyond that I was also given the opportunity to visit international conferences and colleagues, which was an invaluable experience I would not like to have missed. I would also like to express my gratitude to Prof. Jörg Eberspächer and Prof. Naoki Wakamiya who both acted as reviewers of this thesis and provided me with valuable comments in discussions at multiple occasions including joint projects, conferences, workshops, and short term visits. I am also very much obliged to Prof. Dr. Klaus Schilling and Prof. Dr. Dietmar Seipel for being available as examiners for my disputation. Furthermore, I would like to thank Markus Fiedler, Ilkka Norros, Masayuki Murata, and Krzysztof Paw-likowski for providing me the opportunity to visit their research laboratories. My deepest appreciation goes to our secretary Mrs. Förster who with surpassing patience and dedication makes life a lot easier for us at the department. I would also like to thank the people at Bosch, Siemens, AOK, and DATEV who worked together with me over the last five years. From both communication and i Acknowledgements collaboration with them I gained a great deal of experience and never lost track of the practical aspects of my work. In addition to this I would like to thank and especially Holger Schnabel, who all completed their diploma thesis under my supervision and thereby eased my workload. I also had the privilege of working with amazing colleagues, who were always generous with their time and expertise. In particular, I'm very much indebted to Dirk Staehle who has been generous and unstinting with his advise and suggestions. He never got tired of discussing a problem over coffee and fascinatingly always came …

Performance analysis and optimized operation of structured overlay networks
The ongoing process of globalization leads to a huge demand for highly scalable applications. The Peer-to-Peer (P2P) technology enables an arbitrary large number of users to participate and contribute to distributed services like content distribution or collaboration. With P2P, the intelligence is shifted from centralized instances to the edges of the Internet. This shift is supported by the wi...
متن کاملEffects of Churn on Structured P2P Overlay Networks
As structured p2p systems becomes largely deployed, the size of the network becomes large enough that any kind of churn has a significant influence on the performance of such overlay. In structured p2p systems, peers create interactive link with other peers called neighbours that both depend on and influence each other. While peers trust each other’s to delivers services, the network effects ex...
متن کاملA Topology Adaptation Protocol for Structured Superpeer Overlay Construction
Peer-to-peer networks can be divided into structured and unstructured based on their overlay topologies. In reality, unstructured p2p networks with superpeers have proved their capacities to support millions of users simultaneously. However, applications deployed on this kind of overlay networks, such as file-sharing, require flooding or gossip-based message routing, which puts more overhead on...
متن کاملImpact of Neighbor Selection on Performance and Resilience of Structured P2P Networks
Recent work has shown that intelligent neighbor selection during construction can significantly enhance the performance of peer-to-peer overlay networks. While its impact on performance has been recognized, few have examined the impact of neighbor selection on network resilience. In this paper, we study the impact with a generalized cost model for overlay construction that takes into considerat...
متن کاملOn Adding Structure to Unstructured Overlay Networks
Unstructured peer-to-peer overlay networks are very resilient to churn and topology changes, while requiring little maintenance cost. Therefore, they are an infrastructure to build highly scalable large-scale services in dynamic networks. Typically, the overlay topology is defined by a peer sampling service that aims at maintaining, in each process, a random partial view of peers in the system....
متن کاملAn Analytical Framework for the Performance Evaluation of Proximity-aware Structured Overlays
In this paper, we present an analytical study of proximity-aware structured peer-to-peer networks under churn. We use a master-equationbased approach, which is used traditionally in non-equilibrium statistical mechanics to describe steady-state or transient phenomena. In earlier work we have demonstrated that this methodology is in fact also well suited to describing structured overlay networks...
